Solar panels

Solar panels

Information and FAQs

When we install solar panels on your roof, you will immediately start receiving free electricity generated by the panels even when the sun is not shining.

As an added bonus, if you speak to your electricity supplier and ask them to install a smart meter (which is normally free of charge) you will be able sell back any surplus electricity generated from the solar panels back onto the National Electricity Grid and you will get to keep 100% of the proceeds through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payment.

Please note that this page is for customers who are having their solar panels installed as part of an energy efficiency scheme. Some of our existing solar panel installations are unable to receive the full benefits stated. This is due to the contracts we have with third parties. If you have any question regarding this, please contact us.

FAQs

  • Why do I need to have a smart meter installed?

A smart meter records how much energy you use and how must the solar panels generate. They ensure you are only billed for the electricity you use, not what you generate.

With a smart meter, you can sell surplus electricity back to the National Grid — this is called a SEG payment. Without a smart meter your energy provider cannot accurately measure what you export so you will not be eligible for payments.

  • How do I register the solar panels with my energy provider?

After completion of the installation, you will receive a letter and MCS certificate from Westward on how to register the solar panels with your energy provider. This can take up to one month to receive.

  • What is an MCS Certificate?

The MCS certificate proves the system was installed by a certified installer.

  • Why am I still paying for electric when I have solar panels?

If your usage exceeds what the panels generated, you will be charged by your energy provider. During daylight hours when the sun is shining you use the solar energy. On cold days and at night, the electricity comes from the national grid.

  • How often will I receive the money from my energy provider and is this means tested?

Payments can vary so speak with your provider to agree what works for you. The scheme is based on your solar panel systems performance not your household income you can apply for and receive a SEG payment.
