Menopause matters

Perimenopause and menopause are different for everyone. Many women experience symptoms that have a big impact on their daily lives, including relationships, social life, family life and work, or some may hardly have any symptoms at all. Common symptoms may include hot flushes, low mood, sleep problems, chronic pain and memory problems.

Women’s lives are complex, particularly at midlife. As well as balancing work with domestic responsibilities, women may also be caring for young children, teenagers, grandchildren, ageing parents, and in some cases, their partner.

Coping with menopausal symptoms along with these responsibilities can be challenging, and some woman may need extra support from their GP.  Many find that eating well, exercising and looking after their mental wellbeing can help with symptoms during perimenopause and menopause.

We all have an important role to play in ensuring that anyone experiencing menopausal symptoms gets the support and understanding they need. Talking and listening can help women feel understood and less alone. Even small conversations can make a big difference to their well-being.
