Westward at International Women’s Day event in Plymouth
We had a fantastic time celebrating International Women’s Day at Sherwell Church in Plymouth yesterday. The event was jointly organised by Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council and Plymouth Community Homes and it brought together an inspiring mix of people and stories.
The speakers included a woman from Iran sharing her experiences of women’s oppression by the regime, Jemima Laing, the new Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, and Isatta Kallon from Global Communities. There was also wonderful entertainment, from flamenco dancers to a local choir. Volunteers even prepared a delicious vegetarian lunch for everyone to enjoy.
There was a great mix of stalls too, including community police officers, Devon maternity services, cancer support charities, henna artists and Lush Cosmetics offering relaxing head massages.

Westward took along information about job opportunities, board member roles and general housing support. We spoke with lots of local people, helping to answer housing queries and offering guidance where needed.
Overall, it was a really valuable day - one that helped us strengthen community connections and share what Westward can offer.
