Guidance on displaying flags in our communities

Flying a flag can be a special way to show support, express your identity or celebrate. A graphic of a person holding a flag.

We recognise that flags of all types can evoke strong emotions and differing views. We strive to be a respectful and welcoming landlord, and we ask everyone to be considerate of the impact any displays may have on everyone in our community.

We want our communities to feel welcome and inclusive and so customers are welcome to display flags on their own property.

The values of compassion and respect are ones we can all share and aspire to, regardless of background or circumstance.

To make sure flags are displayed in a way that feels safe and respectful for everyone, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Respect others:  Flags, including the flags of our country or any country, can be flown from Westward homes. We will not tolerate written messages or imagery that would be considered inflammatory and encourage hate crime. If this occurs, we will ask you to remove them.
  • Respect shared spaces:  Your tenancy agreement asks that outdoor areas are kept tidy. Flags in your own home or garden are generally fine, however, we do not allow flags in shared spaces like lounges, gardens or hallways unless we have given consent.
  • Safety:  For safety, make sure flags don’t block views, pathways or create fire risks.

If you are concerned about a flag in your community

We want all our communities to feel welcoming and inclusive. If you have any concerns, do contact your council as they often have specific guidance. If we receive a complaint about a flag, we’ll look into it fairly and speak with everyone involved.

If you’d like to talk to us or have any questions, we’re always happy to help. Together, we can make sure flags are displayed in a way that everyone feels comfortable with.
