A warmer, more comfortable home: Linda and Andrew's story

Linda and Andrew’s bungalow has recently undergone a major transformation - one that has left them with a warmer and more comfortable home. While the journey came with some challenges, the couple say the end result has made a “big difference” to their daily lives.

As part of our energy improvements programme working alongside Bell Group, a range of improvements were scheduled to be installed including new wall insulation, a new roof with insulation, new windows and solar panels. The impact was immediate with their home now holding warmth far better. Andrew says: “Before, the heating had to be on for hours. Now within an hour it’s really hot.” They’ve even reduced their thermostat setting from 21°C to 19.5°C and don’t keep it on for as long and still feel completely comfortable.

It is a bit early to see the savings that can be made, but the couple have already noticed a drop in their gas bill since having the wall insulation installed. Just as importantly, the condensation and damp issues they had experienced issues have disappeared. Andrew says. “The windows are fantastic, ever since they put them in, we’ve had no problems.” Linda adds: “No moisture, no condensation - absolutely fantastic.”

While the quality of the work impressed them, the process wasn’t without challenges. Due to the scale of the project, it took longer than expected, and some issues with communication and missed appointments added pressure along the way. We at Westward have learnt valuable lessons from this project and are working hard to improve the experience for future customers.

The couple are clear in their recommendation for any other customers who are offered these energy improvement works. Linda says: “Go for it because it makes a big difference.” We’re proud to support customers through energy efficiency upgrades like this and we’re using Linda and Andrew’s experience to keep improving for others. Funding from a Torridge grant has made this possible.

"Overall, we're very appreciative of what Westward have done - because we're disabled, we don't move around a lot and we don't go out a lot. So we do rely on the heating warming the bungalow - it makes you feel better, doesn’t it?"
