Greenhouse brings residents together

Situated in the village of Starcross is Peacock Place, one of our over 55’s properties. It is a lovely place with great gardens and has a friendly community of residents.

"We are so lucky to have a large garden here with lots of shrub bushes, several large trees like cherry horse chestnut, plums etc."

As you will probably remember, this time last year we were in a lockdown and the restrictions continued into 2021. Because of this, there wasn’t a lot for residents of Peacock Place to do. They decided to create a vegetable patch in their garden, and it went down very well. Crops were grown and it ignited a hobby for some of the residents. Because of the extra space and the new love of growing vegetables, the residents got together and discussed the idea of getting a greenhouse. Very kindly, one of the residents surprised them with just that.

GreenhouseThere is a spacious back garden which a resident had already made look beautiful with plant pots and ornaments, so this was the perfect spot for the greenhouse. After assembling the greenhouse, the residents got to work and started planting seeds. As summer approached, they were growing lots of different varieties of tomatoes, peppers, chilies, carrots, green beans and more. All residents were welcome to pick the crops and often used them for ingredients for their dinner.

As it was a lovely sun trap, they decided to get chairs and tables out to the area to create an outdoor hub for the residents so they could sit out there with a cup of tea or coffee and have a chat. Peacock Place’s very own bistro! It is wonderful to see such a team effort from the residents to make the space look beautiful and welcoming.

They have learned a lot this year and they plan for bigger and better crops for next summer. We can’t wait to see what’s in store.
