Fire safety message for flat owners

Fire safety message for flat owners

The safety of all residents is our main priority and this has taken on greater significance recently following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower.

This is just a reminder that, for flat owners under the terms of the lease, front doors are classed as part of the structure of the building, and fall under the responsibility of the freeholder of the building to maintain and replace. This is to ensure that front doors meet the required fire safety regulations.

Should you wish to change your own front door you must first seek permission, which will not be unreasonably withheld, from Westward Housing. Altering your front door without permission may place you in breach of your lease agreement, and can also place you and the other occupants in your block of flats at risk if the worst should happen, and there is a fire in the building.

Over the coming months we will be checking that all properties meet the necessary standards, and we will be contacting leaseholders regarding their front doors if we believe that there is a fire safety issue.
