Health Surveillance Checks
Westward has introduced health checks for the 59 trades staff in Westward’s property services trades teams.
This is great news as it gives them an on the spot clean bill of health whilst working for us that provides them with reassurance going forward. It also reassures the organisation around risk and that it has a healthy workforce.
This benchmark means that if there is any change then it will be picked up and this is important to protect the health of people who often work in an environment that contains risks.
The multi-skilled operatives are exposed to a variety of risks and so we now check their:
Hand and arm vibration
Skin with regard to chemicals in COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health)
Westward has a duty of care – the readouts show operatives a good level of detail such as their lung equivalent age and then qualified nurses give advice and managers will follow it up. Depending on the operative’s role, he or she may also have additional work specific tests.
The health care screening and occupational health is carried out by medical professionals from Amber Health Care and it provides Westward with the opportunity to follow up and improve on working conditions and protect our most important asset, the work force.
The checks are annual and all new trades staff will automatically be enrolled in the scheme.
Business Support Manager, Nicky Patt, said, "We've had a really positive response universally from the operatives to the health care screening. It helps Westward to meet our corporate plan objectives by providing a great place for our staff to work.”
